Poker cheat may have pocketed $4m spying on hole cards
CoinPoker refunded over $100,000 while ACR found no evidence of exploited hands in 2m reviewed.
The hit
An attacker allegedly used malware hidden in poker-table software to secretly view opponents’ hole cards, costing high-stakes players up to $4m, according to WIRED. The compromised programs, Jurojin & IntuitiveTables, were able to install remote-access tool MeshAgent, giving the attacker eyes on live hands without breaching any poker site’s own systems. The compromised software may have reached more than 1,000 users, reportedly targeting high-stakes players selectively.
Why it matters
Online poker runs on trust that opponents can’t see your cards. If malware riding on third-party multi-tabling software can do that, high-stakes players face a hidden edge no skill can beat. Operators’ differing responses — refunds at some sites, none at others — leave victims unsure whether they’ll ever see their money back.
The record
| Player ‘Alex’s’ losses on ACR | About $30,000, across 11 suspected monitoring events |
|---|---|
| ACR hands reviewed | Over 2m hands checked, including 200,000 from the flagged account (Winning Poker Network) |
| CoinPoker refunds | Over $100,000 repaid to players after banning a suspected cheat |
| ACR’s fix | ScreenShield protection activates by default, limiting screen-capture & remote-viewing tools |
What happens next
Watch for ACR’s ScreenShield rollout on 4 November & whether GGPoker’s request for Coinbase to restrict & preserve the wallet account, plus its findings shared with law enforcement, leads to charges.
