Winkler faces 45 years in college basketball bribery case

The scheme drew more than $1.1m in losses for sportsbooks across more than 29 fixed or attempted games, prosecutors allege.

The hit

Roderick Winkler has pleaded guilty & former Southern Miss guard Arlando Arnold has agreed to plead guilty in the US college basketball point-shaving scandal, according to iGaming Business. Winkler admitted bribery in sporting contests before US District Judge Nitza I Quiñones Alejandro. Arnold agreed to plead guilty to bribery & aiding the scheme.

Why it matters

Both Winkler & ringleader Jalen Smith gained access to players by working as grassroots trainers, according to prosecutors. Fixers targeted players on underdog teams for whom bribes would meaningfully supplement or exceed NIL opportunities. For bettors, it is a reminder that spread markets carried real manipulation risk.

The record

Ringleader sentenced Trainer Jalen Smith got 72 months on 14 October (federal court, Philadelphia)
Scope of scheme 39+ players across 17+ NCAA Division I teams, 29+ games fixed or attempted
