Wynn, banned from Nevada gaming, draws 600 to Golden Nugget talk
Nevada regulators fined Wynn Resorts over its handling of misconduct complaints, according to Casino.org.
The hit
Steve Wynn, barred from Nevada’s gaming industry under a settlement with regulators, spoke at the Golden Nugget on 22 October, more than eight years after his departure from the industry, according to Casino.org. A sold-out crowd heard him discuss building The Mirage, at a Neon Museum event.
Why it matters
Wynn’s settlement with Nevada regulators stops him working in the state’s gaming industry but does not ban public appearances or casino visits, according to Casino.org. His reappearance tests how the industry treats him, even as he denies wrongdoing & was never charged. Nevada regulators fined Wynn Resorts $20m in 2019 over the company’s handling of misconduct complaints.
The record
| Wynn resigned as Wynn Resorts chairman & CEO | February 2018 |
|---|---|
| Wall Street Journal investigation into misconduct allegations | 2018 |
| Fine for mishandling misconduct complaints | $20m (Nevada gaming regulators, 2019) |
| Golden Nugget audience for Wynn’s return | 600 (sold out) |
| The Mirage’s original construction cost | $630m |
What happens next
Watch whether other Las Vegas venues or museums book Wynn for further public appearances now his return has drawn both an audience & renewed criticism.
