COURTS 60-second read

India court rejects Flutter’s Junglee bid to overturn gaming ban

Published: 1 min read
An empty courtroom bench in grand marble surroundings, lit by soft afternoon light through tall windows.

Flutter Entertainment cut roughly 350 jobs after India’s gambling ban, with a separate constitutional challenge still pending.

The hit

India’s top court has rejected Flutter Entertainment’s Junglee Games bid to overturn the country’s online gambling ban, according to GamblingNews. Junglee argued skill-based games deserve different treatment to chance-based gambling, but the court ruled that betting on the outcome can turn skill games into gambling.

Why it matters

The ruling closes off one route operators were using to fight India’s ban. India’s challenges are not unlike those Brazil now faces in its own market, according to GamblingNews.

The record

Ban approved 2025
Ban took effect May this year
State laws challenged Tamil Nadu & Karnataka
Jobs cut at Flutter Entertainment roughly 350

What happens next

Gaming companies have taken the ban to court separately, questioning whether such an overreaching ban is constitutional.
