Malik Beasley set to flip plea in NBA betting scandal
A co-defendant also plans to plead guilty, his attorney confirmed.
The hit
Former NBA player Malik Beasley is dropping his not-guilty plea & will announce a new one within days, his attorney Steve Haney said. Beasley is accused of manipulating his stats in at least four 2023-24 Milwaukee Bucks games to help gamblers win bets, according to prosecutors. A federal magistrate in Brooklyn has been asked to schedule the change-of-plea hearing.
Why it matters
The case is tied to a wider gambling scandal that has led to more than three dozen arrests, GamblingNews reports. A guilty plea would mark a new stage in that case for Beasley & a co-defendant, who is also expected to change his plea.
The record
| Charges filed | Bribery in sporting contests, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud & conspiracy to commit money laundering (US Department of Justice) |
|---|---|
| Games allegedly fixed | At least 4 games in the 2023-24 season with the Milwaukee Bucks |
| Career earnings (reported) | Over $60m reportedly earned by Beasley over 9 NBA seasons |
| Default judgment | $1m awarded against Beasley to a sports marketing agency in 2025 |
| Co-defendant also pleading guilty | A co-defendant, per his attorney |
What happens next
A similar order was filed for the co-defendant, whose attorney confirmed he also intends to plead guilty.
