NCPG hires interim boss after $2m prediction markets revolt

Published: 1 min read
An empty boardroom table with chairs pushed in, lit by late afternoon light through tall windows.

The problem gambling charity names an interim boss after a $2m prediction markets deal sparked a resignation & a membership exodus.

The hit

The National Council on Problem Gambling has named Charles H. Jeffers II as interim executive director, according to Casino.org. The move follows the September resignation of executive director Heather Maurer, after the NCPG took a $2m grant to create a new membership category for prediction markets.

Why it matters

The row shows the problem gambling lobby split over taking money from prediction markets. The NCPG says sports event trading is “functionally gambling” & can expose consumers to the same risks. The departing regulators say they will not align with platforms they believe are running illegal sports betting.

The record

Memberships rescinded Michigan Gaming Control Board, Ohio Casino Control Commission, Nevada Council on Problem Gambling

What happens next

Watch for whether more state regulators or problem gambling groups follow Michigan, Ohio & Nevada out the door.
