Apple bans staff from insider trading on prediction markets
The filing arrives about three weeks after regulators cleared Cboe KPI contracts covering Apple & 22 other companies, though the timing is likely coincidental.
The hit
Apple has told staff & contractors they must not trade prediction markets using confidential company information, according to a new Form 10-K filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission. The filing bars tipping off others too, & applies whether or not the activity counts as insider trading under existing securities law. Apple does not say whether staff can still trade other event contracts, such as sports derivatives, crypto or pop culture.
Why it matters
Prediction markets now run yes/no contracts on Apple’s own product launches & events, giving insiders a fresh venue to cash in on nonpublic details. More companies are already examining & implementing prediction market policies as politicians & regulators apply more scrutiny to insider trading on these platforms, according to Casino.org.
The record
| Precedent case | Ex-Google software engineer charged this year over alleged $1.2m Polymarket gain from nonpublic data |
|---|---|
| New product risk | SEC approved Cboe KPI event contracts on Robinhood, opening a fresh venue for trading on nonpublic data |
| Contract scope | Could be 100 or more KPI contracts planned across 23 public companies, including Apple |
What happens next
Watch how many of the 23 companies named in the Cboe KPI contracts follow Apple with their own prediction-market trading bans in upcoming SEC filings.
