$22m campaign fails to sway Nebraska on mobile betting
Retail sportsbooks have generated about $4m in tax since launch.
The hit
Nebraska voters have rejected two ballot measures, Initiatives 440 & 441, that would have legalised online sports betting in the state, according to GamblingNews. The result came during the midterms, defeating mobile betting once again, despite interested parties investing $22m to promote the measures.
Why it matters
The defeat keeps Nebraska limited to its retail sportsbook network, with no mobile market in sight. Tax Relief Nebraska, which backed the measures, argued residents are already spending money on offshore gambling websites. Operators eyeing a mobile market will have to wait.
The record
| Campaign spend by interested parties | $22m |
|---|---|
| Projected 10-year tax relief if passed | $238m (Tax Relief Nebraska) |
| Proposed online betting tax rate | 20%, with 70% earmarked for tax relief (Tax Relief Nebraska) |
| Mobile licences that would have been created | 12, with rules due by 1 June 2027 |
What happens next
Mobile betting’s defeat in Nebraska will not end the push for legalisation, according to GamblingNews, which expects pro-mobile campaigners to try again.
