Star fined A$260m over money laundering failures
AUSTRAC had sought A$400m while Star argued for A$100m before the court settled on A$260m.
The hit
A federal court in Australia has fined The Star Entertainment Group A$260 million for breaching anti-money laundering & counter-terrorism financing laws, according to Casino.org. Justice Cameron Moore said Star’s systemic failures let organised crime move money through its casinos with limited scrutiny.
Why it matters
AUSTRAC CEO Brendan Thomas said the regulator “will not tolerate companies putting profit over their obligations to the Australian community.” The ruling confirms casinos carry real legal exposure when they let high-risk cash flow through unchecked. For an operator now under new ownership, it is a costly reminder that past compliance gaps still land on today’s balance sheet.
The record
| Fine ordered | A$260m ($183m) by Australia’s federal court, 28 October |
|---|---|
| Prior fine | A$200m fined by regulators in 2022 after NSW & Queensland inquiries |
| AUSTRAC’s ask | A$400m judgment sought by the regulator |
| Star’s counter | A$100m fine proposed by Star in court |
| High-risk revenue | A$1.3bn+ in gross gaming revenue from high-risk customers, Nov 2016-Nov 2022 (Star’s own admission) |
What happens next
Star chairman Soo Kim, who also chairs new owner Bally’s Corporation, says the company can pay the fine. Watch for confirmation of payment & any further AUSTRAC action.
