Ballon d’Or bets spark $200k profit probe
Twelve Polymarket accounts reportedly wagered around $264,000 on the same top-five order; no leak has been established.
The hit
Groupe Amaury, owner of France Football, is preparing a criminal complaint after anonymous Polymarket accounts reportedly made nearly $200,000 betting on the finishing order of the world’s top players. The group confirmed on 31 October it is investigating whether confidential voting results were leaked ahead of the 26 October ceremony. French police have been informed, according to The Guardian.
Why it matters
If voting results genuinely leaked before the ceremony, it exposes how a closed journalist jury process can be gamed through prediction markets. For bettors, it is a reminder that unusual, perfectly-timed wagers on niche markets draw attention, even where no wrongdoing is yet proven.
The record
| Bets flagged | $264,000 wagered across 12 Polymarket accounts on the top five (Upside) |
|---|---|
| Deposits traced | $309,000 deposited across the accounts (Upside blockchain analysis) |
| Withdrawals traced | $500,000 withdrawn from the accounts, first withdrawal reportedly 19 minutes after results (Upside) |
| Accounts created | Between 1 & 20 October, shortly after voting closed |
What happens next
Watch for Groupe Amaury’s investigation findings & whether French police formally open a case; Deblock’s identity-verification records may help identify the kraben006 wallet holder.
