Nevis launches prediction market licence as Utah charges Kalshi
Utah has filed criminal charges against Kalshi, following Arizona’s illegal gambling accusation.
The hit
Nevis has launched a dedicated prediction markets licensing regime, according to the Nevis Online Gaming Authority. The Nevis Prediction Market License covers both B2C operators & B2B tech & service providers, following Gibraltar’s launch of the world’s first such framework earlier in 2026.
Why it matters
For operators, a Nevis licence offers a regulatory base with lighter domestic political pushback than the US, where the status of prediction markets as gambling is being actively contested. It gives firms covering sports, financial, political & crypto markets another jurisdiction to operate from while bigger markets fight over definitions.
The record
| Regulator | Nevis Online Gaming Authority (NOGA) |
|---|---|
| First mover | Gibraltar launched the first prediction markets licence earlier in 2026 |
| US legal action | Utah has filed criminal charges against Kalshi over alleged illegal gambling |
| Prior US action | Arizona previously accused Kalshi of running an illegal gambling operation |
| US federal stance | The CFTC governs prediction markets federally, separate from gambling law |
What happens next
Watch how US states beyond Utah & Arizona respond to Kalshi & similar platforms, & whether more jurisdictions follow Gibraltar & Nevis in launching dedicated prediction markets licences.
