76ers become first NBA team to sign with Kalshi
The tie-up follows Monday’s league-wide NBA deal giving Kalshi & rivals use of logos, data & broadcast ads.
The hit
The Philadelphia 76ers are the first NBA team to sign a deal with prediction market Kalshi, according to the Inquirer. It comes days after the NBA struck a league-wide agreement with Kalshi & rival prediction markets, giving them use of NBA logos, league data & broadcast advertising in exchange for NBA approval over markets offered.
Why it matters
Prediction markets let users trade against each other rather than against a bookmaker. An NBA team signing with one, so soon after fresh gambling scandals involving players, marks a new step in leagues’ ties to the prediction market sector.
The record
| NBA-Kalshi league deal | signed Monday, gives Kalshi & rivals NBA logos, data & broadcast ads |
|---|---|
| Jontay Porter | banned for life from NBA over alleged gambling scheme |
| Malik Beasley | pleaded guilty over separate alleged gambling scheme |
| LeBron James | partnered with rival prediction market Polymarket, drew scrutiny |
| Saquon Barkley | said he was forced by NFL to divest Polymarket stake, per Front Office Sports |
What happens next
Kalshi will fund postgame SEPTA rides for fans at Friday’s 76ers-Knicks game as part of the launch. Whether other NBA teams strike their own prediction market deals is unclear.
