Kalshi hit with first-ever tribal lands sports betting ban
A federal judge has banned Kalshi’s sports contracts on two California tribal lands, the first such injunction.
The hit
A federal judge has issued the first-ever injunction banning Kalshi’s sports contracts on tribal lands, covering the Blue Lake Rancheria & Chicken Ranch Rancheria of Me-Wuk Indians in California, according to InGame.
Why it matters
Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley had originally found Kalshi’s contracts did not violate a tribal compact or the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). The Ninth Circuit disagreed, ruling the tribes were likely to win on the merits, & sent the case back for Corley to weigh the balance of harms. She granted the injunction without explaining her reasons. Other tribes may now seek similar injunctions against Kalshi.
The record
| Injunction issued | US District Court, Northern District of California |
|---|---|
| Geofence breach reported | a Blue Lake Rancheria Gaming Commission member placed a bet on Kalshi while on tribal land, per joint status report; Kalshi says it had voluntarily geofenced the tribes’ lands in September |
| Withdrawn plaintiff | Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians, left the original lawsuit |
What happens next
Kalshi must give the court maps of its geofenced areas by 13 November & a compliance report by 25 November.
