Green motion would ban sports betting ads & track punters by ID
The plan, not yet party policy, could strip Premier League clubs of ad revenue & force ID checks on punters.
The hit
The Green Party’s health working group has put forward a motion to ban all sports betting adverts & introduce mandatory personal ID tracking for punters, according to The Sun. The proposal, which also targets under-25s & introductory offers, is not currently party policy & must clear a conference prioritisation process first.
Why it matters
For bettors, mandatory ID tracking means giving up privacy to place a bet, while an ad ban would strip sponsorship cash from Premier League & Football League clubs. The Betting & Gaming Council’s Grainne Hurst warns tighter rules could push customers toward unlicensed, illegal operators with fewer consumer protections.
The record
| Proposal source | Green Party health working group motion for Autumn conference |
|---|---|
| Enforcement mechanism | “Mandatory player tracking” via personal ID (Green Party motion) |
| Industry reaction | Grainne Hurst, Betting & Gaming Council CEO, calls plan “out of touch” |
What happens next
Watch whether the motion survives the Green Party’s Autumn conference prioritisation process, only proposals passed by conference become official policy.
