Santander told to refund gambling losses after block failed
The bank must add 8% interest on each gambling transaction plus £500 compensation, the ombudsman ruled.
The hit
The UK’s Financial Ombudsman Service has ordered Santander to refund gambling losses run up by a customer, known as Mr R, who reportedly kept gambling with offshore companies even after Santander set up an international payment block. Mr R spent most of a £25,000 house-sale windfall gambling with offshore companies, according to SBC News.
Why it matters
The ruling shows banks can be held liable once they know a customer is struggling with gambling, even if a block fails to stop payments. Santander disputed liability, arguing the decision to gamble with offshore platforms was Mr R’s own responsibility, but the ombudsman disagreed. For bettors, it’s a reminder that payment blocks only cover Gambling Commission-licensed operators, leaving offshore sites as a gap banks are still struggling to close.
The record
| Refund period ordered | 15 August-17 September 2025 (FOS) |
|---|---|
| Losses excluded from refund | £16,000 spent before 15 August (FOS) |
| Interest ordered | 8% added to each transaction in the refund period (FOS) |
| Compensation ordered | £500 for distress & inconvenience (FOS) |
| Santander’s gambling block launched | mid-2019 (SBC News) |
