Betfred boss: high street betting dead by 2030
Fred Done says a machine tax rise threatens shop closures & job losses at Betfred.
The hit
Betfred founder Fred Done says betting shops will vanish from the British high street by 2030, according to SBC News. In an op-ed for The Sunday Times & an interview with the Financial Times, Done blamed looming tax rises for the industry’s terminal decline. He warned a machine tax increase would gut Betfred’s retail estate.
Why it matters
For punters, fewer shops means less access to in-person betting & FOBTs, which already make up half of Betfred’s shop profits. A machine tax increase could force closures well beyond Betfred, reshaping the retail betting landscape nationwide. Horseracing & other sports sponsorships are also at risk, as bookmakers pull funding to offset rising costs ahead of the Treasury’s October Budget decision.
The record
| SMF proposal | Doubling Machine Games Duty from 20% to 40%, proposed in June (Social Market Foundation) |
|---|---|
| Potential Betfred impact | 495 shops closed (45% of estate), 2,475 jobs lost, £66.8m in taxes, £15.8m in horseracing funding (Fred Done) |
| July closures | 132 shops closed, 600 jobs lost, £17.8m in taxes, £4.2m in horseracing funding (Betfred) |
| 2025 Budget tax rises | Remote Gaming Duty up from 21% to 40%; General Betting Duty rising to 25% by April 2027 |
| Autumn Budget | 28 October 2026 (Chancellor John Healey) |
| Industry gross gambling yield | £17.5bn in 2025/26, up 4.4% from £16.7bn the year before (SBC News) |
What happens next
Watch the Autumn Budget, when Chancellor John Healey decides whether to raise Machine Games Duty. Betfred says the outcome will determine further shop closures & sponsorship cuts, including its backing of five classic flat races.
