54% of Irish online bettors hold a second account
ESRI’s 1,000-person study, commissioned by the GRAI, found most online players lost money in their last session, SBC News reports.
The hit
More than half of Irish online gamblers now hold a second betting account, according to an ESRI study commissioned by the Gambling Regulatory Authority of Ireland (GRAI). They opened in search of good odds & promotional offers, the study found.
Why it matters
The GRAI says the data helps it spot harmful gambling practices & assess how well regulations work. ESRI reported that respondents often said it’s easier to open an online account & deposit than to close one & withdraw winnings.
The record
| Second accounts held | 54% of online gamblers (ESRI/GRAI) |
|---|---|
| Four or more accounts held | around 10% of online gamblers (ESRI) |
| Study sample | 1,000 adult gamblers surveyed (ESRI) |
| Lost money in last online session | 57% of online players (ESRI) |
| GRAI established | March 2025 |
What happens next
GRAI CEO Anne Marie Caulfield says the authority will use the findings to monitor practices of concern.
