Arkansas sues Kalshi in third state crackdown this week
Arkansas accuses Kalshi of running illegal gambling & wants a judge to order restitution.
The hit
Arkansas has sued Kalshi, accusing the federally regulated prediction market of running an illegal gambling operation & ignoring state limits on casinos & sports betting. Attorney General Tim Griffin filed the suit on Wednesday, calling Kalshi a “pocket-sized bookie” that lets 18-year-olds wager real money on sports & entertainment outcomes.
Why it matters
Kalshi insists its sports contracts are derivatives overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, not state-regulated gambling. That argument is now being tested state by state. Griffin wants a judge to declare Kalshi broke Arkansas’s deceptive trade practices act & to order restitution.
The record
| Arkansas suit filed | Wednesday, accusing Kalshi of illegal gambling |
|---|---|
| Utah criminal charges | 14, against Kalshi & co-founders Tarek Mansour & Luana Lopes Lara |
| Other states acting | Arizona, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan & Nevada (charges, suits or restrictions) |
| Separate suit | Arkansas also sued VGW, operator of Chumba Casino & Global Poker, in White County |
What happens next
Watch for Kalshi’s response to Arkansas & the outcome of the CFTC’s suit against Utah, which argues only Washington can regulate these contracts.
