Arkansas sues Kalshi, alleging mental harm from its bets
Arkansas attorney general Tim Griffin filed the lawsuit on Wednesday, alleging illegal gambling that causes mental health harm.
The hit
Arkansas attorney general Tim Griffin has sued Kalshi, alleging the platform runs illegal gambling that causes depression & other mental health harms. Griffin said Kalshi lets users wager on “just about anything.” He added that betting on “whether the Razorbacks win or lose is gambling.” The Block has asked Kalshi for comment.
Why it matters
Kalshi insists its event contracts are federally regulated derivatives, not state-level gambling products. InfoBets’ read: every new state lawsuit tests that defence & could narrow where Kalshi can legally operate in the US. InfoBets’ read: the outcome could decide whether prediction markets stay open as a regulated alternative or get shut out state by state.
The record
| Utah criminal charges | Filed last week against Kalshi, CEO Tarek Mansour & COO Luana Lopes Lara |
|---|---|
| Utah civil lawsuit | Filed before the criminal charges, against Kalshi & two Susquehanna trading firms |
| CFTC counter-litigation | CFTC has sued at least 10 states, according to The Block, arguing the states intrude on its jurisdiction |
What happens next
Watch for Kalshi’s formal response to Arkansas & the outcome of the CFTC’s suits against the states.
