SCANDAL 60-second read

Hacker faced €250,000 fine, wins Malta gaming authority court fight

Published: 1 min read

Lilith Wittmann says the dispute ran to around 2,000 pages of court documents.

The hit

A Berlin court has ruled that hacker Lilith Wittmann can keep describing the Malta Gaming Authority as an ‘organized crime enablement scheme’, she said Friday. The Malta Gaming Authority & its CEO, Charles Mizzi, had sued Wittmann in Germany after she breached its systems in March. Wittmann calls the case a SLAPP suit; the regulator has not commented.

Why it matters

The ruling matters because it lets Wittmann keep using documents she obtained from the Malta hack, after a judge at a September 10 hearing reportedly viewed her comments as opinion rather than false statements of fact, according to Wittmann.

The record

MGA injunction sought After a March hack
Court documents generated Around 2,000 pages, per Wittmann
Legal costs to Wittmann €15,000-€20,000, per Wittmann
Potential penalty risked Up to €250,000 or six months’ detention, per Wittmann
Casino Secrets documents leaked More than 40,000 files from the Curaçao Gaming Authority
