Brazil’s betting ban could run past 20 December target
A Supreme Court hearing on 3 November will pull in gambling firms & football clubs as Congress’s committee remains unformed.
The hit
Brazil’s provisional measure banning fixed-odds betting has yet to clear its first procedural step in Congress, according to Yogonet. No committee president or rapporteur has been named, leaving 94 amendments unresolved despite the government’s push to pass the ban by 20 December.
Why it matters
Until a rapporteur is appointed, the amendments can’t be considered, according to Yogonet. That leaves the measure’s fate hanging as operators, football clubs & the courts weigh in separately.
The record
| Amendments filed | 99 submitted, 5 withdrawn, 94 outstanding |
|---|---|
| Government deadline | 20 December (Institutional Relations Minister José Guimarães) |
| Expedited procedure begins | 9 November, blocking the chamber’s agenda |
| Initial 60-day period ends | 23 November, followed by automatic extension |
| Expiry if unapproved | 4 March 2027 (BNLData calculation) |
| Supreme Court hearing | 3 November (Justice Luiz Fux, with government, gambling firms & football clubs) |
What happens next
The legislative clock is suspended during the December-February recess.
