CFTC names insider trading an enforcement priority
A Google software engineer allegedly risked $2.75m in Polymarket trades while denying wrongdoing.
The hit
The CFTC says policing insider trading on prediction markets is an enforcement priority, according to enforcement director David Miller. Speaking at the Next Predict Summit in New York, Miller said the agency does investigate, has investigated & may have open investigations into candidates trading on contracts tied to their own elections.
Why it matters
Prediction markets like Polymarket had operated in a grey zone over whether insider-trading law applied at all. Miller’s comments confirm the CFTC now treats breach of duty over material nonpublic information the same way it does in traditional derivatives markets. For bettors & traders on these platforms, that means confidential information tied to a job, a campaign or a government role can carry legal risk, not just a platform ban.
