Illinois proposes self-exclusion for 50,141 video terminals
The proposed rule also builds cashless wagering accounts with KYC & anti-money laundering checks into the terminal network.
The hit
The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) has proposed rules folding more than 50,000 video gaming terminals (VGTs) into the state’s self-exclusion programme, according to CDC Gaming. Self-exclusion currently covers casinos, sportsbooks & fantasy sports; the new rule would let people enrol via identity checks at VGT redemption terminals, according to the IGB.
Why it matters
Illinois runs what board administrator Marcus Fruchter calls the largest video gaming network of its kind in the world. Fruchter said the rule brings video gaming’s problem gambling protections “in line with” those already in place for casinos & sports wagering. The rule also sets up cashless accounts with built-in responsible gambling limits.
The record
| Video gaming terminals affected | 50,141 (Illinois Gaming Board) |
|---|---|
| Licensed locations statewide | 8,800 (Illinois Gaming Board) |
| Wagers on VGTs in September | $2.9bn (Illinois Gaming Board) |
| September reforms | Tiered enrolment periods & 12-month marketing exclusion list added to self-exclusion programme |
What happens next
The proposed rule now goes to the Illinois General Assembly’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules for approval before it can take effect.
