UK gaming machines get forced breaks & £450 loss caps
The rules largely exempt machines already in operation.
The hit
The UK Gambling Commission will force new gaming machines to impose session limits, breaks & loss caps, according to the regulator. Players must actively choose limits or accept defaults capped at 20 minutes & £150 net loss; consumer-set limits cap out at 60 minutes & £450.
Why it matters
For bettors, new machines will stop play automatically once a limit is hit, with a mandatory break & safer-gambling messaging before they can continue. The Commission says an alert does not itself require immediate intervention.
The record
| Rollout start | 30 March 2027 for session definitions; most changes from 30 June 2027 (Gambling Commission) |
|---|---|
| Staff alerts mandatory | 3 October 2028 (Gambling Commission) |
| Machines at risk if retrofitted | around 7,770 machines (industry estimate) |
| Annual staff-alert cost | £20.76m to £41.63m (Gambling Commission impact assessment) |
| Machine gambling revenue | £2.6bn gross gambling yield, April 2024 to March 2025 (Gambling Commission) |
| Immediate removal rule | from 29 July 2026 for non-compliant machines (Gambling Commission) |
What happens next
Games are treated as new based on their final testing dates; operators adding a new game to a multi-game compendium must upgrade the whole platform.
