Taiwan trio held over $612,000 lottery receipt scam
Investigators say the men printed genuine winning certificates using other people’s purchase data to claim prizes that weren’t theirs.
The hit
Taiwan police have arrested three men accused of printing genuine winning lottery certificates that belonged to other people, according to Casino.org. One suspect, a 28-year-old man, allegedly tried to claim two NT$10 million prizes worth a combined US$612,000 in Penghu County. Staff grew suspicious of his run of luck & refused payment, alerting police.
Why it matters
The scheme exploited Taiwan’s Uniform Invoice Lottery, which turns shop receipts into tickets to fight tax evasion. Officials say there’s no evidence the electronic invoice system was hacked, leaving open whether insiders leaked data to the suspects. The Ministry of Finance says its safeguards against duplicate claims remain secure.
