Philippines arrests 244 foreign nationals in gambling raids
Law enforcement, backed by the military, hit both locations in a joint operation, the Philippine Immigration Bureau says.
The hit
Philippine authorities arrested 244 foreign nationals in raids on two illegal offshore gambling sites, according to the Philippine Immigration Bureau. The first site yielded 110 Chinese nationals, two Cambodian nationals & one Hong Kong resident. The second yielded 131 foreign nationals, including workers from China, Malaysia, Indonesia & Myanmar.
Why it matters
The raids show Manila still chasing offshore gambling operators two years after it disbanded the POGO sector. In the absence of licensed operators, offshore gambling operators have kept operating on the fringes of the country, creating illegal enclaves where human trafficking, illegal gambling & drugs take place.
