Peru bill would hike betting wager tax fivefold to 5%
The Civic Works Party bill says the current levy raises Peru S/324m a year.
The hit
A bill filed by Peru’s Civic Works Party would raise the country’s selective consumption tax on online bets fivefold, from 1% to 5%, according to iGaming Business. The tax applies only to online wagers, leaving land-based gambling untouched, & sits on top of the existing 12% gaming tax on operator revenue.
Why it matters
Licensed operators including Stake, Rush Street Interactive & Betsson entered Peru’s regulated market after its February 2024 launch. A fivefold tax rise raises the cost of taking bets there, & the bill itself says operators could pass some or all of the cost to bettors through changes to betting conditions, absorb it, or share it between operators & bettors.
The record
| Current annual ISC revenue | S/324m / $94.1m, according to the bill |
|---|---|
| Projected annual ISC revenue at 5% | S/1.62bn, per the bill’s illustrative scenario |
| Gambling addiction treatment cases | 14,409 recorded nationwide in 2025, per Peru’s health ministry |
What happens next
Watch for the bill’s progress through Peru’s Congress; if passed, the new 5% rate takes effect from the first day of the month after publication in El Peruano.
