NY tells 8 sportsbooks: fix at-risk bettor gaps or we will
Regulators also advanced AI rules restricting personalised odds, bonuses & bet suggestions without customer consent.
The hit
New York’s gaming regulator warned sportsbooks Friday they must start sharing data on at-risk bettors or face intervention, according to Covers. The commission says a customer restricted by one operator can simply keep betting with any of the other seven licensed operators.
Why it matters
For bettors, it signals New York wants a single safety net across operators rather than eight separate ones. If sportsbooks don’t build a shared system voluntarily, chair Bryan O’Dwyer said the commission will impose its own solution. The Sports Betting Alliance, which represents licensed operators, says it wants to work with the commission on any new rules.
The record
| Date of warning | 9 October 2026 (New York State Gaming Commission) |
|---|---|
| Operators named | FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Fanatics & Caesars (commission) |
| AI rules origin | March 2026 package from Gov. Kathy Hochul targeting underage & at-risk gambling marketing |
| Final vote date | Not yet set (commission) |
What happens next
The commission will gather further public comment & expert input on the AI rules before a final vote, which has no set date. Separately, it has given operators a chance to build a shared data-sharing solution before deciding whether to impose one itself.
