NCPG boss Maurer quits after Kalshi deal sparks member exodus
Kalshi pledged $2m over two years to the harm-reduction group before members began walking out.
The hit
NCPG executive director Heather Maurer has resigned, according to the NCPG Board of Directors, which said she will stay until 16 October to help with the transition while a search for her replacement begins. The resignation follows member agencies quitting the group over its partnership with Kalshi, according to Legal Sports Report.
Why it matters
The exits show state regulators do not want to be linked to a company some have fined or sued over prediction markets. Losing state gaming boards as members weakens NCPG’s credibility as a neutral voice on gambling harm just as Kalshi’s legal status is being fought in court.
The record
| Kalshi joins NCPG | Platinum-level member, announced 18 May (NCPG) |
|---|---|
| Ohio Casino Control Commission | fined Kalshi $5m in April; quit NCPG 26 June |
| Michigan Gaming Control Board | won injunction against Kalshi; first to publicly quit NCPG, early July |
| Nevada Council on Problem Gambling | ended NCPG membership mid-August after June pause request was denied (Nevada Current) |
| Massachusetts Gaming Commission | signalled possible exit at 10 September meeting |
| Maurer’s resignation | announced Saturday; departs 16 October (NCPG Board) |
