NBA restricts first-basket & under-parlay player props
The NBA is rolling out mandatory betting-rules training & new prop restrictions for 2026-27.
The hit
The NBA is restricting a string of player prop bets for the 2026-27 season & drafting in former FBI agent Charles Tillman to run mandatory betting-rules training, according to Front Office Sports. The league has told sportsbooks it is scrapping bets on first basket, first rebound, assist, steal or block, plus the opening tip & missed-shot props. It is also restricting under-parlays on a single player & certain under bets for players expected to play fewer than 12 minutes.
Why it matters
Commissioner Adam Silver has said for over a year it is “too easy to manipulate something which seems otherwise small and inconsequential to the overall score”. For bettors, it means fewer niche prop options, alongside heavier league monitoring of unusual wagering patterns via a new AI system, according to Front Office Sports.
The record
| Banned props | NBA letter to sportsbooks |
|---|---|
| Restricted parlays | NBA letter to sportsbooks |
| Trainer hired | Charles Tillman, ex-Chicago Bears player who said in September 2025 he had resigned from the FBI |
| Covered operators | DraftKings, FanDuel, Fanatics & Caesars as NBA partners/authorised operators |
| Prior integrity case | Jontay Porter banned for life in 2024; he pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy |
| Pending case | Terry Rozier denies federal gambling charges; trial reported for February 2027 |
What happens next
The rules apply from the 2026-27 NBA season & extend to WNBA games in 2027. Watch Terry Rozier’s trial for how prosecutors’ prop-betting allegations play out.
