Maverick founder buys back two Nevada casinos to dodge 30 Nov shutdown
The two casinos are currently run by RRC Gaming Management under ex-Caesars boss Tony Rodio.
The hit
Maverick Gaming co-founder Eric Persson is reacquiring the Maverick Casino Hotel & the Gold Country Inn & Casino in Elko, Nevada, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. The deal is expected to be completed within three weeks, after both properties filed notices warning of possible closure.
Why it matters
Persson says the deal is unusual because he is buying back his own name & brand from lenders at auction, which would let him keep the two casinos running. Persson says staff would technically lose their jobs under the bankruptcy process but be rehired by the new ownership. He has used the same playbook before in Washington state, where he kept eight casinos running rather than let them shut.
The record
| Jobs at Maverick Casino Hotel | 198 employees |
|---|---|
| Jobs at Gold Country Inn & Casino | 41 employees |
| Closure warning filed | WARN notices filed last week with Nevada’s employment department, warning of closure by 30 November |
| Prior save in Washington state | 850 jobs preserved across eight casinos, per Persson |
What happens next
Watch for the deal to complete, with Nevada gaming regulators monitoring the transaction & the closure deadline as the key date.
