850 jobs at risk as Maverick Gaming’s Washington empire shrinks again
New owners could still save some sites, Maverick says, as its Chapter 11 case plays out.
The hit
Maverick Gaming has filed WARN notices to close eight more Washington cardrooms, putting 850 jobs on the line, according to Casino.org. The closures are set for 30 November as the operator restructures under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Why it matters
Maverick built Washington’s biggest nontribal cardroom empire betting lawmakers would legalise commercial sports betting. They gave the market to tribal casinos instead, leaving Maverick overleveraged & outcompeted.
The record
| Jobs at risk (this filing) | 850 (WARN notices, filed 28 September) |
|---|---|
| Closures also set for 1 November | Riverside Casino & Great American Casino, Tukwila (238 jobs) |
| Jobs affected since June | 400+ across five other Maverick cardrooms |
| Chapter 11 filing | July 2025, assets & liabilities each estimated $100m-$500m |
| Asset sale proposed | $65.8m for casino, hotel & tech assets |
| Peak venue count | 24 cardrooms acquired from 2018, including 19 in 2019 alone |
What happens next
Watch the Chapter 11 case for whether new buyers take over any of the eight sites before the closure date, which would save some jobs.
