MARKETS 60-second read

Google writes prediction markets into its ad rulebook

Published: 2 min read

Advertisers must hold local financial, commodity & gaming licences before any ad runs, according to Casino.org.

The hit

Google has issued its first dedicated advertising policy for prediction markets, according to a document released last week, as reported by Casino.org. The policy requires advertisers to hold local financial, commodity & gaming licences, plus Google’s own certification, before ads can run.

Why it matters

The policy gives licensed exchanges a clear route to advertise on the world’s largest search platform, while locking out unregulated rivals. Google doesn’t name specific licences, but Casino.org says US rules mean operators need a Designated Contract Market licence from the CFTC, while those running vertically integrated exchanges that take custody of client funds need the Futures Commission Merchant designation from the NFA. Google cites unspecified geographic parameters, which Casino.org says may reasonably be read as a likely bar on yes/no sports exchanges advertising in Nevada, a state that bans sports event contracts. Analysis: for bettors, it could mean the prediction markets they see advertised are more likely to be regulated operators.

The record

Google’s wording Advertisers must hold “all applicable local financial, commodity, and/or gaming licenses”
US market licence, per Casino.org Designated Contract Market licence from the CFTC
Custody requirement, per Casino.org Futures Commission Merchant designation from the NFA, for vertically integrated exchanges taking custody of client funds
Platform requirement Certification & approval from Google before ads can run

What happens next

Watch for whether Google restricts sports event contract ads in states such as Nevada, & which prediction market operators secure Google certification first.
