FanDuel tells Congress VIP videos weren’t designed to induce betting

Published: 1 min read
An empty congressional hearing room with rows of vacant seats & a wooden lectern, no visible text or papers

The row traces back to a VIP bettor who allegedly lost big on FanDuel & is now suing the company.

The hit

FanDuel has told three members of Congress that roughly 30 celebrity Cameo videos sent to VIP customers were not designed to keep them gambling. The letter, sent Tuesday & obtained by InGame, is the company’s third response in a months-long dispute with Sen. Richard Blumenthal & Reps. Valerie Foushee & Paul Tonko.

Why it matters

FanDuel says VIP perks work like customer-loyalty programmes in many industries, intended to keep bettors on FanDuel rather than a rival platform.

The record

Trigger Philadelphia Inquirer report (August) on a Bryce Harper Cameo video sent to a VIP customer
Alleged losses $1.52m lost on FanDuel over six years; $336,000 on DraftKings, according to media reports
Lawsuit The bettor sued FanDuel & DraftKings in March, alleging VIP hosts encourage addictive gambling
Congressional demand 6 October letter from the lawmakers said FanDuel’s response so far was unacceptable, & demanded FanDuel release the full Cameo videos
FanDuel’s reply FanDuel Predicts is running a 90-day VIP trial without Cameo videos, Fox says, & FanDuel will intervene if addiction is suspected

What happens next

Watch for whether the stalled SAFE Bet Act gains any fresh momentum from the row.
