Buenos Aires senator’s ‘Lula Law’ seeks full online betting ban
Operators would get just 10 days to pull ads & block users under the plan.
The hit
Buenos Aires provincial senator Federico Fagioli has introduced a bill to ban online betting outright, including slots, roulette, blackjack, poker & sports betting, according to Yogonet. The bill is nicknamed the “Lula Law” after Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s iGaming ban last month. It would repeal Chapter VIII of the province’s Online Gambling Regulation Law No. 15,079, revoking existing licences.
Why it matters
If passed, this would go further than any rival bill now before the Chamber of Deputies & Senate, forcing licensed operators to wind down fast & refund every active account. For bettors in Buenos Aires province, it would mean losing legal access to online casino & sports betting entirely.
The record
| Bill sponsor | Federico Fagioli, Buenos Aires provincial senator, Fuerza Patria party |
|---|---|
| Law targeted for repeal | Chapter VIII, Online Gambling Regulation Law No. 15,079 |
| Operator deadline to block access & pull ads | 10 days after the law takes effect |
| Operator deadline to refund user balances | 30 days after the law takes effect |
| Rival bills already before the Chamber of Deputies & Senate | More than 22 in the Chamber of Deputies, at least 3 in the Senate |
What happens next
Watch the Chamber of Deputies’ Committee on Gambling, Lotteries & the Prevention of Gambling Addiction, which began debating a unified bill last week.
