Brazil sues 17 betting firms for BRL1bn moral damages
The claim comes as Brazil’s blanket betting ban takes effect on 6 October.
The hit
Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office (AGU) has filed suit against 17 betting companies, including Bet365, Betano & Superbet, in the Federal Court of Pernambuco, seeking BRL1bn in moral & collective damages. The firms privatise profits while pushing gambling-related health costs onto the public system, according to the AGU.
Why it matters
The case targets the five years before the filing & continues for as long as the damages persist, the AGU says. The exact health-system sum is not fixed in the lawsuit & will be calculated later. A ruling against the named firms could carry weight across the wider market, given their combined share of it.
The record
| Moral & collective damages sought | BRL1bn (AGU) |
|---|---|
| Estimated health system damages | BRL2.6bn / $444.3m (AGU) |
| Share of operator revenue to health ministry | 0.12% (AGU) |
| Market share of named firms | approximately 80% (available studies) |
| Brazil-wide betting site block begins | 6 October (Brazilian government) |
What happens next
Watch the Federal Court of Pernambuco for the next filing. Industry groups have asked the Supreme Court to overturn the ban.
