Brazil’s illegal betting sites jump 141% after Lula ban

Brazil’s online betting ban has backfired fast. Monitoring platform Bet Legal found 415 new illegal betting sites created in the two days after Lula’s ban took effect, taking the cumulative total to 710 domains, while the government scrambled to take down clandestine sites.

Why it matters

The numbers suggest a ban does not remove demand, it just moves it. Brazil’s games & lotteries association ANJL warns the state now loses tax revenue while more than 30 million bettors shift to platforms operating outside regulatory obligations & oversight.
