Brazil bookies turn stadium ad boards against Lula’s betting ban
LCA says up to BRL73bn in revenue could be at risk between 2027 & 2030 if all demand migrates to illegal operators.
The hit
Licensed Brazilian betting firms gave up stadium ad board space during top-flight football matches to protest a government ban on online betting, according to iGaming Business. Signs reading “To prohibit is not to protect” appeared at São Paulo v Santos on Friday & Atlético-MG v Bragantino on Saturday. The protest follows Provisional Measure 1,394, which banned online betting in Brazil.
Why it matters
The trade bodies behind the protest, ANJL & IBJR, argue the ban strips protections from bettors rather than stopping them betting. They warn the illegal market is set to take over entirely, hitting clubs’ sponsorship income & leaving bettors exposed to unregulated sites with no safeguards.
The record
| Provisional Measure 1,394 enacted | 25 September |
|---|---|
| Active licensed bettors | 31 million (Brazil’s Ministry of Finance) |
| New illegal betting websites detected | 6,401 between 22-28 September (Legitbet) |
| Illegal market share of wagers before ban | 41% (ANJL/IBJR) |
| Revenue at risk to illegal operators | up to BRL73bn ($14bn) between 2027-2030 if all demand migrates to illegal operators (LCA) |
What happens next
Watch for ANJL & IBJR’s willingness to discuss deposit limits, advertising rules & stricter illegal-site enforcement with the government as the ban’s effects on sponsorships & club finances play out.
