InfoBets explainer: Ranking versus rating: why two padel lists can disagree

An official ranking orders players under competition rules. A strength rating uses a model to summarise performance. Both can be useful, but they do not measure exactly the same thing.

The FIP ranking

For 2026, FIP says its ranking takes players’ best 22 eligible results from Premier Padel & the CUPRA FIP Tour. Points depend on tournament category & round. The rules also explain how points are defended & expire.

A results-based rating

A model can adjust results for opponent strength. PadBets, for example, describes an unofficial rating where the opposing pair affects the size of a change after a result. Different models can produce different numbers from the same match history.

Two records, different questions

Imagine Player A reaches later rounds in several eligible tournaments. Player B plays fewer events but beats several strong opponents. A points system may reward A’s tournament record more. An opponent-adjusted model may rate B more highly. This is an illustration, not a calculation from either real system.

How to compare the lists

  • Check the time period & eligible competitions.
  • Check how many results are included.
  • Read the formula or method before treating a number as precise.
  • Consider partner changes, missing matches & current conditions.

A rating of 1,800 is not automatically a win probability. It becomes a probability only through a defined, tested conversion. A ranking position is not a probability either.
