REGULATION 60-second read

UK gaming machines get forced breaks & £450 loss caps

Published: 1 min read
A government building facade at dusk, stone columns lit from below, an empty plaza in front.

The rules largely exempt machines already in operation.

The hit

The UK Gambling Commission will force new gaming machines to impose session limits, breaks & loss caps, according to the regulator. Players must actively choose limits or accept defaults capped at 20 minutes & £150 net loss; consumer-set limits cap out at 60 minutes & £450.

Why it matters

For bettors, new machines will stop play automatically once a limit is hit, with a mandatory break & safer-gambling messaging before they can continue. The Commission says an alert does not itself require immediate intervention.

The record

Rollout start 30 March 2027 for session definitions; most changes from 30 June 2027 (Gambling Commission)
Staff alerts mandatory 3 October 2028 (Gambling Commission)
Machines at risk if retrofitted around 7,770 machines (industry estimate)
Annual staff-alert cost £20.76m to £41.63m (Gambling Commission impact assessment)
Machine gambling revenue £2.6bn gross gambling yield, April 2024 to March 2025 (Gambling Commission)
Immediate removal rule from 29 July 2026 for non-compliant machines (Gambling Commission)

What happens next

Games are treated as new based on their final testing dates; operators adding a new game to a multi-game compendium must upgrade the whole platform.
