Brazil’s illegal betting sites jump 141% after Lula ban
Brazil’s government has already pulled down 506 illegal gambling sites since the ban, & found 43 Telegram channels pushing illegal betting.
The hit
Brazil’s online betting ban has backfired fast. Monitoring platform Bet Legal found 415 new illegal betting sites created in the two days after Lula’s ban took effect, taking the cumulative total to 710 domains, while the government scrambled to take down clandestine sites.
Why it matters
The numbers suggest a ban does not remove demand, it just moves it. Brazil’s games & lotteries association ANJL warns the state now loses tax revenue while more than 30 million bettors shift to platforms operating outside regulatory obligations & oversight.
The record
| New illegal sites since ban | 415 domains created, taking the cumulative total to 710 by 7:10pm Sunday (Bet Legal) |
|---|---|
| Two-day increase | 141% rise in illegal betting sites (Bet Legal) |
| Sites already blocked | 506 illegal gambling websites taken down (Ministries of Justice & Finance) |
| Telegram groups found | 43 channels with over 212,000 members promoting illegal betting |
| Addresses flagged, 1 January-22 September | 57,691 addresses forwarded by the Secretariat of Prizes & Bets to Anatel for restriction (Poder360) |
What happens next
Watch whether Brazil’s take-down effort with Anatel can outpace new domain creation, & whether ANJL’s warning is borne out.
