Greek basketball chief Liolios among six in fixing probe

The probe reportedly also covers a foreign club’s bribery complaint that previously triggered a FIBA sanction.

The hit

Greek Basketball Federation president Vangelis Liolios was arrested along with five others on Wednesday in a match-fixing probe, according to eKathimerini. Investigators are examining roughly 50 games, reportedly ranging from the top domestic division to youth & school competitions. Those arrested include three current & former referees, a senior refereeing official & a businessman & former athlete.

Why it matters

A federation president accused alongside referees points to alleged fixing reaching the top of the sport’s governance, not just isolated games. The probe’s scope, from elite to school level, raises questions over how far betting markets on Greek basketball can be trusted while the case runs. Bettors should watch for any market suspensions on implicated fixtures.

The record

Arrests	Six people arrested Wednesday, including Liolios (eKathimerini)
Games probed	Approximately 50 games, 2016-2026 (investigators)
Cash found	€820,000 reportedly found in possession of one arrested person, deemed unexplained (authorities)
Origin of probe	Club Maroussi filed a complaint in April over the federation’s operations
Witnesses	Eight witnesses gave statements; two reportedly supplied significant information despite past bribery links
International link	Foreign club’s bribery complaint over a playoff match previously led to a FIBA sanction

What happens next

Liolios & the other five are expected before an investigating magistrate Thursday & may seek more time to prepare statements. Watch for any formal charges or FIBA response.
