Kalshi does $19bn in one week, mostly sports, not politics
DeFi Rate puts execution-price volume at $4.42bn, less than a quarter of the headline figure.
The hit
Kalshi recorded $19.03bn in contract volume for 5-11 October, the highest in a six-week series reviewed by DeFi Rate. Most of it came from sports & parlay-style “Combos”, not elections or crypto. The figure is measured at payout value, not what buyers actually paid.
Why it matters
For bettors & industry watchers, the number looks huge but doesn’t mean $19bn changed hands. Cheap, long-shot Combos can rack up massive notional value from tiny purchase prices, swelling headline volume without matching new money or deposits. That arithmetic doesn’t by itself show artificial trading or improper reporting, according to CCN, but it makes Kalshi’s growth claims, & comparisons with rivals, harder to read at face value.
The record
| Weekly contract volume | $19.03bn, 5-11 October (DeFi Rate) |
|---|---|
| Execution-price volume | $4.42bn (DeFi Rate), same week |
| Sports share of 30-day volume to 6 October | 84%, including 61% from Combos, per data cited by CCN |
| Combos share on 10-11 October | approximately 70% of notional activity (Bitcoin.com) |
| Polymarket cash-dollar volume | approximately $498.81m for the same week (DeFi Rate) |
What happens next
Watch for Kalshi’s next weekly figures & whether DeFi Rate or rivals publish execution-price turnover, active customer counts or fees to back up notional volume claims.
