Polymarket’s Ethiopia & Romania markets rack up $600m post-result
Polymarket blocked the accounts involved but has not explained why they traded so much first, WIRED reports.
The hit
Two Polymarket election markets drew over $600m in trading volume largely after the races were already decided, according to WIRED. Most trading was on long-shot losers in Ethiopia & Romania, with researcher Chris Park tracing $284m of the Ethiopia total to pairs of accounts trading with each other.
Why it matters
For bettors, it undercuts the pitch that prediction markets reflect real public belief. If huge volume can come from accounts trading with themselves rather than genuine wagers, headline figures & odds on Polymarket become far less trustworthy as a guide to what traders actually think will happen.
The record
| Ethiopia market total volume | over $285m, nearly all on losing candidates (WIRED) |
|---|---|
| Days bursts of trading continued in Ethiopia market after election | 123 days (WIRED) |
| Wash trading flagged in Romania market | 99.6% of volume in certain weeks (Rajiv Sethi) |
| Median hold time before resale | 9 seconds across 38,000 trade loops (MSR Decode) |
| Polymarket’s latest valuation | $21bn after $1bn funding round (WIRED) |
What happens next
Watch whether Polymarket explains why the flagged accounts traded so heavily before being blocked, & whether scrutiny of unusual market activity spreads to a possible token.
