bet365 fined SEK 40m in Sweden but keeps its licence
Spelinspektionen cut the fine from an original SEK 65m citing bet365’s cooperation, corrective actions during & after the audit, & a 10% annual turnover cap on sanctions.
The hit
Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, has fined bet365 rather than suspend its licence, despite calling its failures serious & systematic. Hillside, bet365’s operating entity, was handed SEK 40m for its sports arm & SEK 4m for gaming, over a customer-care & deposit-limit breach that allegedly ran from 2019 to 2022. The regulator also issued a warning alongside the fine.
Why it matters
Players choosing a ‘no limit’ deposit option were in fact capped by a hidden SEK 500m threshold, not a real numeric limit, which the regulator says broke the law. Spelinspektionen opted for a warning instead of revoking the licence because bet365 made corrective changes during & after the audit.
The record
| Sports arm fine | SEK 40m, cut from SEK 65m |
|---|---|
| Gaming arm fine | SEK 4m, cut from SEK 14m |
| Hidden technical limit | SEK 500m, never disclosed as a numeric cap |
| Breach period | 1 January 2019 to 19 April 2022, alleged |
| 2021 Swedish sports GGR | SEK 724.5m |
| Sweden market rank | 4th-largest operator (Blask Index) |
What happens next
Watch whether Spelinspektionen extends its recent attention, which has also caught infractions by Betsson, Mr Green & ATG, to other licensed operators over deposit-limit enforcement.
