Brazil court pulls Stake back offline after two days
The federal appeals court sided with the AGU, which argued one operator’s return could undermine the uniform application of federal measures.
The hit
Stake’s Brazil site & app went dark again on 10 October, just two days after a lower-court injunction let it reopen. The Federal Regional Court of the 3rd Region suspended that injunction on 9 October, acting on an emergency appeal from Brazil’s Attorney General’s Office, according to Yogonet.
Why it matters
The ruling restores the status quo for Stake under Lula’s betting ban, but it settles nothing. The appeals judge objected to one company trading while competitors stayed shut, not to the ban itself. A separate constitutional challenge at the Supreme Federal Court remains unresolved.
The record
| Stake reopened | 8 October (Judge Cristiane Farias Rodrigues dos Santos) |
|---|---|
| Injunction overturned | 9 October (TRF-3, Judge Luis Antonio Johonsom di Salvo) |
| Site & app offline again | 10 October |
| Injunction ran to | 25 October 2026 |
| Request to run to 31 December 2029 | rejected |
| Tax revenue at risk over 4 years | R$73bn / $14.7bn (LCA Consultores) |
What happens next
Watch 25 October, Brazil’s presidential runoff, where prediction markets give Flávio Bolsonaro an 87% chance over Lula. Justice Luiz Fux is holding any ruling on suspending the ban until after that vote.
