Pennsylvania skill games face raids from 14 October after court ruling
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court this week rejected a bid to extend the stay to February 2027.
The hit
Pennsylvania’s skill game stay ends today, according to Casino.org. From tomorrow, businesses still housing the machines risk raids, seizures & criminal prosecution under the state Supreme Court’s ruling that the devices are illegal slot machines.
Why it matters
Proponents say skill game revenue helped small businesses offset inflation & avoid job cuts. Lawmakers ran out of time under the state’s three-day rule, which requires a bill to be considered on three different days in each chamber before reaching the governor, with no emergency exception. A court emergency stay was the only remaining hope, according to Casino.org.
The record
| Ruling | Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled skill games are slot machines (June) |
|---|---|
| Machines affected | More than 70,000 skill games estimated statewide pre-ruling (state officials) |
| Stay request denied | Extension to 10 February 2027 rejected this week (Pennsylvania Supreme Court) |
| Compliance deadline | 13 October, with enforcement from 14 October |
| Law cited | Section 5513, Crimes Code, unlicensed slot machines |
What happens next
Watch for enforcement action from the Pennsylvania Attorney General & State Police from 14 October.
