Sands boss rules out prediction markets as Macau slows
Sands has already ploughed billions into non-gaming projects under its Macau licence terms.
The hit
Sands chairman & CEO Patrick Dumont has ruled out prediction markets for the world’s largest gambling firm by market value, even as Macau gaming revenue slows for a fourth consecutive month. Dumont said prediction markets aren’t a business Sands is or wants to be in.
Why it matters
Sands has long avoided iGaming & sports betting, a stance set by late founder Sheldon Adelson, who once wrote: “Click your mouse, lose your house.” Dumont’s comments show that aversion now extends to prediction markets. For bettors, it signals one major operator will stay out of the prediction-market race.
The record
| Non-gaming investment | About $3.5bn committed by Sands China under its 10-year Macau licence extension, granted December 2022 |
|---|---|
| Venetian Cotai Expo expansion | Almost 200,000 sq ft added |
| Londoner conservatory & garden | 538,000 sq ft developed |
| Venetian suite renovations | All 2,900 suites upgraded |
What happens next
Watch for Sands China’s next quarterly results & further Macau gaming revenue figures to see if the slowdown continues or if the non-gaming investments lift repeat visitation.
