Thai anti-crime crusader Atchariya jailed in $30m betting probe
Police say an alleged online boxing betting network is under investigation after an illegal betting probe in Thailand.
The hit
Thai anti-corruption campaigner Atchariya Ruangrattanapong has been jailed pending trial, accused of links to an illegal online boxing betting operation police say handled about $29.6m, according to Casino.org. Bangkok Criminal Court denied him bail on Monday 5 October & approved a 12-day detention order.
Why it matters
Atchariya built his reputation challenging alleged police misconduct & pursuing high-profile criminal cases, so charges built on police financial evidence cut both ways. He denies all charges, calls the case politically motivated & claims police fabricated evidence against him.
The record
| Alleged betting network turnover | 1bn baht / $29.6m (Thai cyber police) |
|---|---|
| Transactions police say link Atchariya to betting figures | 212 transactions, 40m baht / $1.2m (police) |
| Atchariya’s personal bank account activity | 1,196 transactions, 191m baht / $57m (police) |
| Crime Victims Assistance Club account activity | 5,140 transactions, more than 168m baht / $50m (police) |
| Charges faced | public fraud, money laundering, illegal electronic betting, Computer Crime Act offences (allegations against Atchariya) |
