Vegas cinema chain bets $1,000 on Kalshi against Hollywood
Kalshi says over 200 businesses used it for hedging last month. CBS News separately reported an ice cream shop & a New York bar also hedging on the platform.
The hit
A Las Vegas cinema chain is betting against Hollywood to protect its own revenue. Brenden Theaters, which runs seven cinemas across four states, bought a Kalshi contract that pays out if studios release fewer than 60 films this quarter, according to CBS News.
Why it matters
Brenden faces a seasonal pattern where summer fills seats & fall drops off, according to 24/7 Wall St. If Brenden’s bet wins, the payout cushions weak ticket sales from a light slate; if it loses, extra ticket sales should cover it.
The record
| Set aside to trade | $1,000 (Brenden Theaters COO Robert Lytle) |
|---|---|
| Payout trigger | Fewer than 60 films released this quarter (CBS News) |
| Businesses hedging on Kalshi last month | 200+ (Kalshi’s Nicolas Hull) |
| Median prediction market user return, July 2025-March 2026 | -8% (Citizens Financial Group) |
| Median legal US sportsbook user return, same period | -5% (Citizens Financial Group) |
What happens next
The release count due in January will show whether Brenden’s hedge paid off or missed its mark. Watch for further state action against Kalshi’s model, which the Commodity Futures Trading Commission is fighting to keep out of state sportsbook rules.
